A group of 12 artists were hand picked to cover every UEFA Champions Leage (UCL) game, from the Group Stages right through to the final. Individual match days were picked at random and given to each artist, the brief was intentionally left loose so that each artist could put their own spin on each particular game.
I was tasked with drawing match days 1, 3 and 5, which featured Manchester City, Celtic and Spurs. For the MCFC game I decided to draw a Pep ‘Heat Map’. For the Celtic game I took my inspiration from the famous Jock Stein quote. Whilst for Spurs I decided to give a heavy nod to F1 and Monaco’s Grand Prix heritage. The fact that the Williams and McClaren livery matched the strips of Spurs and Monaco was simply too good an opportunity to miss.
Each artist was asked to submit 3 pieces during the Group Stages, which created a knock-out competition via ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ on social media. As well as appearing during BT Sports live broadcasts and as teasers to matches, our work was also featured at the Principality Stadium for the 2017 final between Juventus and Real Madrid.
This was such a great project to be a part of and included some unbelievable work over 3 seasons. I’ve name checked a few of my personal favourites below, alongside my own work.
